For courses in College Algebra.

This package includes MyMathLab®.

Visualize. Interact. Succeed.

Beecher, Penna, and Bittinger’s College Algebra is known for enabling students to “see the math” through its focus on visualization and early introduction to functions. With the Fifth Edition, the authors continue to innovate by creating and positioning review material to provide a more effective tool for teachers and students.

25 Just-In-Time review topics are placed throughout the text and MyMathLab to help students right when they need it most. This, along with the existing Mid-chapter Mixed Review exercises, Study Guide summaries, and the new MyMathLab with Integrated Review course, students have an unparalleled amount of review resources to help them be successful in the course.

Personalize learning with MyMathLab

MyMathLab is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with this text to engage students and improve results. Within its structured environment, students practice what they learn, test their understanding, and pursue a personalized study plan that helps them absorb course material and understand difficult concepts. With this edition, the authors focused on developing MyMathLab features that help better prepare students and get them thinking more visually and conceptually.

I already have a BS and an MS and am changing careers. Had to take a college algebra class to close my core classes. I hated algebra before and I loathe it now. I''m very good at basic 4 function math. Don''t really need a calculator. However, this book just shows examples. It doesn''t show you steps. It like goes from A to B but doesn''t tell you how it got there like A.1, A.2, A.3. Considering this is NOT a refresher course but is a class I''m supposed to be learning, this book isn''t worth the paper its printed on. I was a college professor for four years. Also, there are errors on MyMathLab. As experts in the field, there should be NO errors in the tools that students use to learn. It wastes valuable time and causes unneeded confusion and stress. I wish I could ask the publisher for a refund because this book and the MyMathLab don''t really "teach" they show and those are two different things.
The exercise problems aren''t remotely demonstrated within the unit. So I don''t know how the heck to do the majority of those. Once again, prime example of the book not teaching. Its like teaching you how to fry a food and then expecting you to know how to bake when those are two different things.
I think this book is ridiculous and could be written to be student friendly and actually teach a student who is interested in learning. The publisher and person who wrote this book should be ashamed of their self... leave textbook writing to people, TEACHERS that actually KNOW how to teach. Its apparent they do not. Signed, a frustrated former professor and current college algebra student. Your book sucks.
The sad thing is, the average person doesn''t know better... I on the other hand do.

You might be surprised why construction industry is in rumbles. There is a problem in this book of a guy cutting out the arch from the existing wall with the door to make an arch. If you are trying to teach Algebra you should have common sense and should no basic stuff.

This is an okay book for the typical college student who is taking the course because s/he has to and doesn''t care. And there''s probably no choice. For certain sections that need to be stressed (because most of the students are of the sort who find math hard or something they just hate and just have to get through it to graduate) because of how demanding the problems can be at this level, it can get really lacking in the number of examples.

But ultimately, this book is grossly expensive for what it is. A College Algebra book covering these topics in this much space should not be the price it is, especially considering the 5th edition doesn''t actually add much new in spite of what it claims to. The problems aren''t really varied, either. There are a lot of good ways to organize your problems so students can clearly differentiate between difference of squares and perfect square trinomials and how to factor these using the super simple "memorize this formula," but this book fails spectacularly, and it''s not the first time this book does that.

It just comes off as more of a "Hey, I wrote these lessons. Now I''ll use a Random Problem Generator to create the problems!" from the author. This is never excusable because problems should have some purpose in mind, either with clear progression (easy -> medium -> hard), development (rote work -> word problems and understanding), or motivation (neat examples). You won''t get that here.

I feel that this textbook wasn''t too complicated to utilize. However, I had to purchase a My MathLab Access Code in order to do my assignments for my College Algebra class and the book was optional. I felt like I used the book very little since My MathLab had plenty of practice questions and step by step assistance available for solving equations. I would recommend this book if you are required to have it or if you need physical materials in front of you in order to learn better. Otherwise, I would not spend the money on it. It''s very similar to most other College Algebra textbooks. It covers the basics and while it isn''t terrible, it also isn''t really spectacular. Thankfully, I rented the book so I did not feel like I lost out on anything.
